Paul about Bogdan:
Bogdan, is the small one on the right :-). He's addicted to coffeine, he can't live without it. Coffee or Coke, sometimes even Coffee-flavoured chewing-gums are his favourite foodstuff. I consider Bogdan to be absolutely crazy, because he constantly communicates what he's thinking, even during classes. He's a bit of a Clown, which doesn't make him less charming though, it is just so that you can either laugh with or about him a lot. I believe he's most interested in hunting: deers and bunnies :-).

Sören about Jörn:
Jörn is the boy, straight in the middle of us. Not the smallest but all right in the front! Well what’s up about Jörn? He is the craziest table-tennis-player I know. Always playing, in the weekend, in the week. I think Jörn likes everything you can play on a table. It’s not only table-tennis. It’s also table-football. He would also play Baseball on a table if he would be able to. He lives in a village named Sande, far away from everything being fun (oh I forget table-tennis :-)).
Bogdan about Sören :
Sören is the tallest boy of our group . He is 17 years old . He is our Computer freak . He likes beer and girls, especially his girlfriend Adda . When you need somebody to drink with, ask Sören . He likes everything with alcohol especially our beer. He plays handball in a successful team . Handball is a famous sport in Germany but it is not the sport number one. Sören lives in the suburb of Jever (Jever has the big population of 13.000). It means he lives in the country with sheep, dogs, cows together. Sören is a good guy who says what he thinks and does what he promises. So that is all I can report about Sören.

Jörn about Paul:
This is Paul! He lives in Jever now, but he moved here two years ago. Before he lived in Cologne . We use this fact to tease him with carnival. Carnival in Cologne is as popular as carnival in Rio . Also he likes skating and going fishing. He is sixteen years old and has a brother who is called Jörn. He normally does not go shopping in a shop or market, he buys nearly everything at eBay. He is very sinewy but nevertheless he is nice.

Hey Friesenjungs!
My name is Cassandra Maker. I live in a small town on the East coast of Massachu setts.
Bogdan, I will agree with you that coffee is one of the best things ever created. I could not make it through the morning without it. Last semester in school, we had a class that met once a week at 6:30 in the morning, which is an hour earlier than school usually starts. To top it off, it was the middle of winter, so it was freezing. Our teacher bought us a giant container of coffee every week, so by the end of the class we were all bouncing off the walls. Then he'd get mad because we wouldn't stop talking. And, hey, people think I'm crazy most of the time too :).
Jörn, I know how you feel living in the small town away from all the fun :). I have to drive for about a half an hour just to get to a town where there is some source of entertainm ent. So I hear you like to play any game that you can play on a table. Do you play pool? I play, but I'm not very good. I invented my own version, where I just throw the pool balls around on the table and see what happens.
Sören, I like computers too. Can't say that I know how to work them all that well, though. Usually I end up breaking it instead of fixing it. I just take pride in the fact that I know how to work it better than my mother does. Can't say I agree with the beer and girls part though... :)
And finally Paul. I have never been able to figure out how to use EBay. I always seem to mess it up. I guess that goes along with my talent with computers. I love to skate. Do you skate in-line or ice, or both? Personally, I'm better at in-line. Or at least I was before my sister broke my skates when she went out with her friends. It's okay, though. This spring she's buying me new ones.
Well, I guess that's all for now. I look forward to hearing from you guys and working with you and all that fun stuff.

To Garbsen , 13.2.:
Hi, Marvin
I am one of the Friesenjungs from Jever. My favotite sport is table-tennis,too and I would like to know if you play in a sportsclub. If yes please tell me in which league you are playing. I read that your favorite music is German Hip Hop. Which groups or people do you like most? My favorite musician is Will Smith. He is an Englishman but his music is very good.

Well making music is not really my way. But really love good music like techno and punk rock. Do you know blink 182! They are gods! ;-)
Websitebuilding is great. I made the page for our presentation in the internet (look: http://www.mgprojekte.mgjever.de/lc2003/index.htm) and my own page (look http://www.sw-interaktiv.de) But have not enough time to do more pagebuilding.
What editor do you use. I have a “copy” ;-) of Microsoft Frontpage. Do you work with tools like Flash or ActiveX? Do you have your own homepage? Sören

Hey Friesenjungs,
Hi, My name is Mike Fahey, and I am a junior at Marshfield High School, in Marshfield, Massachusetts. I am 16 and an eleventh grader in the United States. At school I am involved in yearbook, newspaper, key club, project reach, studen t council, and tennis. I love to spend time with friends and family.
Bogdan, I share you sentiments about caffine, however I can't drink it because it upsets my stomach, and I would be a scary kid on caffine. I am much to hyper without the aid of anyt hing as it is. I am one of those people who always speaks his mind, too. No matter what, I am going to tell people what I think. I think that is an important quality in a person.
Jorn, I just want to share my table tennis story with you. Last year at c amp, I played table tennis (in the US we call it Ping Pong) for the first time. I absolutely loved it. It was the greatest experience ever. However, when I would play, I had trouble because I play actual tennis quite often for my school. So, I would alway s yell, "Can't you tell I play tennis?" when I would mess up. So, my nickname for the week became the Kid who Plays Tennis.
I had a question about the legal drinking age in Germany. What is it? It's been really nice to meet you all. I hope that we have good times working together.

Sören to Ramallah:
Hello,
I am interested in genetic engeneering in general. Do you know the sheep Dolly which dies because of it's cloning?! Do you also know Pre-implantation-diagnostic? With PID you are for example able to set the eye-color of your child. In Germany it is forbidden, but in countries like Great-Britain you are able to use it. I and some other people write an essay about genetic engineering and PID. For that we asked a lot of people about their opinions. So I have lot of data. I f you are interested I would send it to you?! Well, a lot of people say that genetic engeneering in general is good, but you should know how to use it. Means: use it for "good" things like make quadriplegic people able to walk, but don't use it for things like cloning human beings..
I think like them. And what do you say?

I am interested in you opinion....
Greetings from Jever

I want to know opinions of American people.Do you agree with the opinion of George Bush?Does the society know everything about the crisis and the intention of the government? Are you interested in the `coming´war? I think other people see the situation with different eyes. If you are interested in this or if you have other exciting topics please write back.

Sören to Seattle , 14.3.:
Hello Seattle ,
I think food is an interesting theme. If I could I would eat all the day. ;-)
In Germany our schools has no cantine so I have to eat at home. But my mother cooks every day something good.
I like to go out for lunch or dinner. Last week I was out with my girlfriend. Eat in a chinese restaurant. Is was great, but expensive. I live in a small town but we although have a lot of different restaurants. I think it's great to be able to select between many different restaurants like Greek, Chinese or Italian.
Some times I also like McDonalds or BurgerKing or something else. But in general I like other thinks..
And you? We have in Germany no real "American Restaurant". Only McDonalds, etc.. Have you a german restaurant? Do you often go out to for eating?

Greetings (an a good lunch for today)

(1) A reason why girls always go together in restrooms is because we like to  have one another's companionship. We just go together or wait for each  other to come out. Or, if we have something important or private that we  have to tell one another, restrooms make a good and private place to talk.  Some girls go into restrooms together to help one another with make-up or  hair. Or maybe girls are just more social than boys are, but then again we  can't see each other when we go like guys do in the men's restrooms. The  ladies' restroom is a good place to get away from the boys because of  course guys can't go into the ladies restroom and girls can't go into the  men's room.
Teachers aren't that bad most of my teachers are pretty nice . Actually  you are right. Some teachers can be really weird. Like my homeroom teacher  for example. He uses a maraca(an instrument filled with something to make  a rattling sound) to get the students in the hall to walk faster and get  to class. He shakes it in their faces to scare them. So I guess he's kind  of crazy, but not funny like Jim Carrey. My science teacher is also  strange too. He tries to use hip lingo because he thinks that we think  he's funny. He talks like Barney the Dinosaur and says things like "super  duper!". Once, he even said, "isn't the metric system so cute?" Yes, he  called the metric system cute.   Darlene  Washington, USA

from L’Aquila, 21.3.: Dear Paul, Bogdan, Soren and Jorn from Mario and Stefano

Mario:
We are two students from L'Aquila , a little town in the centre of Italy . Stefano is 17 and he has curly hair. He's tall. He plays computer games about 8 hours a day, but he likes playing soccer. I met him 3 years ago when we went together with other friends to England . He is slow-witted because computers have destroyed his brain. At the moment he's got a broken knee 'cos he fell over while skiing and now he has to use crutches. He likes beer and girls. Let me say something about your first topic: I think girls go to restrooms together 'cos ... actually I don't know, but I think it's useful for us to get rid of them during meal times. While they're away we can speak about them, how they're dressed, if they're beautiful or not, if they're easy to pick up.  Now, as regards teachers, I don't think they're aliens, just robots, programmed to break our balls. What else can I say? I hate them.

Stefano:
Mario is 16, tall, has brown hair and eyes. He loves beer and every  Saturday goes out to drink a lot of  alcohol and then runs after all the girls he can see. He plays tennis very well and runs (after girls). He likes metal music and plays bass. He's egocentric 'cos sometimes he smokes cannabis. Some nights when he's drunk, he goes around throwing stones at windows. He rides a tricycle 'cos his parents are afraid of buying him a motorbike or car. Last week he bought a little monkey to play with 'cos he hanged his dog and poisoned his goldfish. He's crazy.
Girls always go to restrooms together so they can smoke, or one  keeps the door closed while the other  does what she has to do. When boys arealone, they talk about the bodies of their female  friends, about what a girl is like; if she's  easy topic up or not, if she's good in bed or not, orthey just speak about sports. Some teachers arereal teachers, others animals that deserve to die under a car!! A teacher has never thrown a notepad at me, but if one ever does, I'll throw a chair at him! Some are crazy and often break my balls, others are good teachers and can teach their subjects well.

from Ramallah, 21.3.:
Cloning humans: Can it really be done?

Q. How would it be done? A. The model is Dolly the sheep and although the >technology has been applied to several animals, it is still highly underdeveloped and the mechanisms involved are poorly understoodThe scientists would remove the DNA from the nucleus of an egg cell taken from the mother. This DNA would then be replaced by the genetic material taken from one of the father's cells (or as in this case, the mother herself) - perhaps a skin cell. A trigger would be applied to the egg cell that would then make it start to divide like any normal embryo. The mother would have it implanted in her womb in a procedure which is routinely performed in IVF clinics. Q. So, what are the dangers? A. Experience with the five mammal species that have been cloned so far indicates that there would be almost no chance of success. The vast majority of pregnancies involving clones have gone very badly. In most of them, the clone has died and in almost all of them the lives of the mother and clone have been put at risk. In many cases, the clone grows abnormally large, often threatening to tear the womb that can also become swollen with fluid. Almost all clone pregnancies spontaneously abort. Dolly the sheep, the first mammal clone, was the one success in 247 pregnancies. If a human clone is produced, the cost in human suffering and the trail of failures will be large. Q. What if a human clone is born? A. Of the small number (little more than 1%) of animal clones that make it to term, most have severe abnormalities: malfunctioning livers, abnormal blood vessels and heart problems, underdeveloped lungs, diabetes, immune system deficiencies and possibly hidden genetic defects. Several cow clones had head deformities - none survived very long. it would be fair to say that experts are amazed in the few instances that cloning has worked. Q. Is it possible to choose healthy embryos for cloning? A. Screening for suitable embryos will not work. Normal babies are made from the joining of genes from sperm and egg. Genes are "imprinted" - a poorly understood process that avoids any genetic confusion between similar maternal and paternal genes. There is evidence that in clones this imprinting does not work properly. There is no way to screen any embryo to detect this problem. Q. What will happen if a clone grows up? A. We know very little about the long-term health of clones. There is some evidence that they may not live as long as conventional humans and may have health problems. Studies are ongoing. Q. Would the child be an exact copy of the genetic parent? A. Not if the donor genetic material comes from a man or from another woman. On the genetic level, the clone would be 99.9% identical to its parent, but it would not be a complete copy because there are some important genes that would be contributed by the egg donor. These genes reside outside the nucleus. Also, the clone would be subject to different environmental factors and a different upbringing to his/her genetic parent. This could result in a changed appearance and personality. If the recent research on the human genome has taught us anything, it is that we are far more than just our genes. . But isn't all of this illegal anyway? A. In most countries that carry out advanced biomedical research it is. In less developed countries, including some that offer test-tube baby programmers, there are no laws against it. Just taking the UK as an example, there is now a specific law to ban the placing of any embryo in a woman's womb that is not created by a fertilization process. This was introduced a year ago. All embryo research in Britain requires a license and you simply would not get one if you said you wanted to make human clones. But remember, all of this is quite separate to therapeutic cloning. This is a more limited use of the Dolly technology to obtain important cells, which could yield novel therapies for degenerative diseases.

Hello everybody,
I think the life with in technology century would be very interessting, but also still dangerous if don't know what you do or how you are able to protect yourself. I my freetime I program computer as well as I make Internetsites, so I know about security holes especially in the Internet Explorer (ActiveX, Visual Basic Script). It is alwys the same, if don't know what you do it can be dangerous.
Think of the early chemists, they only tested some elements without  knowing what would happen. Or think of the atombomb in Japan . The  only difference, and that's theBIG problem, between the situation in  the past and now is, that today everyboy uses the Internet or mobile phones, although they don't know how it works. Remember the chemitrists... they are not able to work with elements if the don't know what would happen. In first chemistry-lesson I learned how to be carefull with elements (Don't put your nose above it! Don't touch it!, etc.) So, people should (don't have to) make a security course before they really uses the internet (upload files, download files, etc.) so there wouldn't be so much viruses, trojaner and internet dialer.
So, have a nice day (and be carefull when you read this :-)

from Seatlle, 23.4.:
Here in the world today, there is a catastrophe going on between   United States and Iraq , also known as the "Third world war." In my  opinion, I believe that the United States is doing the right thing distributing forces to fight Iraq . Three reasons why I strongly support the  United States and its government because first of all, it will take  Saddam Hussein out of power to lead Iraq, it will stop him from hurting  many citizens in Iraq and other countries, and most of all, it will give  the United States control of Oil and gas prices.
First of all, I support the United States and its government to do military action against Iraq because it will take Saddam Hussein  out of power. Saddam Hussein alone, is one of the most powerful  people in the world, due to him controlling oil prices, ruling all political  power in  Iraq , and owning lots of chemical weapons to kill many  countries surrounding Iraq , and other of its enemies. Once Saddam doesn't  have power, our gas and oil prices won't be as costly, many Iraqi  citizens won't be controlled by its government, and many neighboring  countries won't have to be bothered about being in danger, getting bombed  by Iraq . Once Saddam loses power, he will be considered nothing.
Second, I support the United States because it will prevent  Hussein from harming many of its citizens, neighboring countries, and  other enemies. Right now Hussein and his goverment are harming  many of the Iraqi citizens, and killing them if they do not abide in his laws. Also,  he harms his neighboring countries for power, and also harms many  rival countries. By the United States taking force against Iraq and  takes Hussein out of power, its government won't harm Iraq 's citizens,  and many other countries will not be harmed by chemical artillery. Once  Hussein is out of power and out into justice, nobody will have to be  concerned about being harmed and bombed by Iraq .
Lastly, and most importantly, I strongly support the United  States  and its government because once Hussein is put out of power,  the United States will manage over all gas and oil prices. This is an  advantage to the United States and the world as well because it will give  profit to the  United States , and will also make all gas prices cheaper. With  the United States managing over all gas prices, gas wouldn't be as  expensive, and also the world wouldn't have to be concerned about having an  embargo, also known as not giving oil to other countries.
In conclusion, I state that I am strongly for the United States and its government to force military action against Iraq . Three  reasons why support The United States because it will take Saddam Hussein  out of power to lead Iraq, it will stop him from hurting many citizens in Iraq  and other countries, and most of all, it will give the United States  control of Oil and gas prices. I believe that that the United States is  doing the correct thing. That's why I strongly support the United States and  its government.  -Matthew

(1)Dear Matthew !
Your e-mail was very interesting to me! What do you think  about the UN? I think it is our future. I remember that an American president said  in front of the UN that wars are bad and not a solution for a modern community! The UN is a constitution which was founded to  prevent wars! Why cannot the American troops and the inspectors from the UN find  any ABC-weapons. Have you ever thought about the innocent people  who are dying during the US bombardements? I think that Saddam Hussein  was a Dictator but a war is not an answer. What would you think if a state  which is stronger than the USA states that the USA owns weapons or  something like this and that they have the order from God to kill Bush?
Bogdan Hinz , Germany

(2)Hi Matthew,
you say that Saddam Hussein is one of the most powerful people in  the world. And he controls the oil prices...  Well isn't it okay to control the oil prices of one’s own country? And remember your president. He is also one (I think he is theonly  one)of the most powerful people in the world. You do not criticize it, don't you? And he also controls the oil prices of your country.  On the other hand I think it's right to criticize Saddam Hussein  because of his criminal actions against his the people of his own  country and against his neighbour countries.  You think it's right to give all the power (e.g. to control the oil prices) to America . I think it’s right to catch this power from Saddam Hussein. But why giving the power to the USA ? After Saddam, there would be a new Iraqi government. It's their own country, so the oil belongs to them,so they should control the oil prices themselves. We, the European Union and also the USA , all free countries of the world should help them to build a good, new government. In Germany it works after the WW2...  greetings from Germany Sören

(In response to topic #2, part 2, Jever , Germany , The Friesenjungs-  Faculty: Are they teachers or aliens?)  The Good Ones Stick With Us  I do not doubt that some teachers do come from another planet, but I do think that it can only be scaled on a teac her-by-teacher basis. Some are very good; some are very, very bad. Some could, in fact, be aliens. Even the teachers that are the best in the school display otherworldly tendencies. I personally think it's the first impression that makes all the differenc e. I must say that I have had a few good teachers in my four years of high school. Maybe not so ironically, they've all been the ones who have been around the system for a while. Most of the newer teachers don't know how to handle their students, and they tend to get angrier a lot faster than those who have dealt with the problems countless times before. They know their way around a school, and they know how to deal with the students that need to be dealt with. My junior year, I had one of our sch ool's physics teachers during his first year teaching here. He is a chemistry major who had, not very surprisingly, been "asked to leave" three schools prior to coming here. On our very first day of class, he openly told us that he had never taught physic s before, and didn't really understand a lot of it. There were constant arguments over statements that school work takes precedence over everything else, and if we had a lacrosse game, for example, he assured us that if we, "told the coach we had physics homework, he should let [us] sit a game out." He also got on my nerves because he would assign a massive homework assignment and then not do it himself, so he had no idea what was happening when we were going over the answers. I can't stand when teachers do that. It's not fair. If we have to do it, they should too. I have also had some exceptionally good teachers. The first was my junior and senior year English teacher. She's also the drama director, and I am also in the drama program, so I have worked with her since my freshman year. I had her for the English half of American Studies (a class that mixed both English and History into one curriculum) last year, and for Advanced Placement English this year. She's the laid back type of teacher. We always have due dates on papers and projects, but she will let us know if she doesn't have time to correct them. She tells us all the time, "I have a life, just as you have a life. There are days when I just don't have time to correct your work. So, why have you pass it in incomplete when I won't be correcting it for a few days?" I like her because she is willing to admit that she is human too, and sometimes she just doesn't have time to get things done. When production week for drama rolls around, she understan ds, just as we actors understand, that we spend a lot of time at play practice, and may not have a lot of time to do loads of extra work. My Advanced Placement U.S. History is also one of the best teachers that I've had. The class is made to be discus sion based, so that we can fully understand the concepts instead of skipping over them. The idea with the Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses is that we take a big test at the end of the school year, and a good grade can mean an exemption from the class onc e we get into college. Because the test takes a few hours and is very fact-based, we basically need to know the information in our sleep. Our teacher is really good with the discussions. We get into actual discussions about history, instead of just taking notes all day long. It assures that we fully understand the information that we are learning. He also knows that we get tired, and we need to sleep sometimes. He is the technical director for our drama department, so he is at our rehearsals a lot. He giv es us a lot of homework some nights because we need to get through about 400 years of U.S. history before May, but he also understands if we don't get all of it done during the weeks where we have a lot of rehearsal time. I have, at times, referred to him as my second father. He makes great bonds with his students, and he is one of those teachers who you can talk to about anything, and he will listen and give advice. It's great to have a teacher that you can talk to about random, current events or issues that you've been thinking about, and have someone actually listen and respond and give their opinion. He's a great teacher. Sometimes we do end up with some pretty bad teachers, but sometimes we do get the amazing ones who impact our lives in more ways than we can imagine. The bad teachers are all too easily forgotten. The good ones, though, usually stick with us through most of our lives. Teachers and how they treat us and how we treat them
As soon as we become older we begin to understand things that  earlier we couldn't understand very well. When I was in the 7th or even in  the 8th form I thought that teachers were my main enemies. I didn't  realize that they were the same people as we are (students). I thought that  they could only shout at us or give poor marks. And on that two thing their  life ended. But except school life they have their own private life  with their problems, failure and success. And because of these things their  mood can change, but earlier I didn't understand that. At this age we  became selfish we are interested only in our problems. We consider that  only our point of view is right. But now I'm ashamed. Because in our school there is no teacher  for whom I can say that she is bad and that I hate her or even dislike her. All teachers in our school are perfect. They are perfect not only in  teaching, but also in usual life. You can speak with them about any  troubles in your life and they always hear you and if they can they certainly help  you or give advise. I have been studying in my school for 11 years and  now I'm sorry because in one month we will graduate from school and  will rarely see our teachers, it is very sad because as for me our teachers are  very dear people for us, so after graduating I will loose a lot. So how  do they treat us? They teach not only concrete subject, but also they  teach us how to live, how to survive using their subject. And we teach them  how to communicate with us, how to understand us because not always  we find common decision. I think that teachers shouldn't think that we  are children, they should realize that we can have problems too (and  it doesn't matter if these problems are in our family or in our  school life) and teachers must accept our behavior. But if a student is really a  grown up, he will never show his feelings to anybody and you have  been taught to be tolerant also in school.  However, we are all people and there is no difference between  students and teachers except the age and life experience.
